About the Author
Imani Spencer
Imani Spencer, a Chicago native, mother of two young men and YaYa to another boy child, can never remember a time, even in her childhood, when she was not reading and writing! Always fascinated and intrigued by the written word, she kept a pen in her hand, drafting plays, short stories, and skits. As an adult she has scripted poetry, adult fiction, and has even ghost written for others.
Becoming a children’s book author was not ON purpose, it was FOR purpose. Imani’s niece was being bullied at a very young age, so Imani decided to be the change she wanted to see. When Imani was a young adolescent growing up, she didn’t see books with a protagonist that looked like her or even had similar experiences. She was determined to not only advocate for her niece, but also for the little girl that would forever reside inside of her. The Kink in My Hair came to life in 2021.
Consequently, many parents and loved ones asked Imani, “What about the boys?” This was a no brainer, after all, she is a boy mom. The Kink in My Hair, Too was published in 2023. In 2024, Boys CAN Wear Tights was published as well as I AM!: An Affirmation and Gratitude Journal for Kids.
